San Juan de la Cruz ‘ilustrado’: Obras espirituales (Sevilla, Francisco de Leefdael, 1703)

Abstract

In the Sevillian printing known as the Vallestilla, edited by Francisco de Leefdael in 1703 appears the Obras espirituales que encaminan a vna alma a la más perfecta vnión con Dios, by San Juan de la Cruz. This book offered readers of the time an attractive and illustrated edition of the poetry of the Carmelite mystic. This study identifies and analyzes the textual and visual sources underlying this editorial project.
