Chapter | De los nombres de Calderón
Abstract
Most of Calderón de la Barca’s plays show how this author assumed classical dramatic techniques and adapted them to his theatrical conception. This article focuses on one of these classical procedures: his usage of motivated anthroponyms, those which both call and describe a character. We will consider this dramatic technique in the context of Spanish Baroque, in which the Naturalist theory in Linguistics was widely accepted, and its utility for a dramatist who needed economic theatrical procedures. At the end of this article I will propose a taxonomy to classify motivated names in Calderonian plays in order to consider their importance in Calderón’s theater.
