Capitolo | Lope en Francia entre adaptación y traducción
Abstract
During the 17th century, Lope de Vega’s plays are adaptated in France, whereas the first translation appears in 1700. Thinking about the differences between the concepts of adaptation and translation leads to realize that the critics use similar theoretical instruments to study both phenomena. Under this premise, it seems possible to compare adaptators’ strategies with translators’ interventions or observations into the paratexts. That could be a useful method to analyze the reader-oriented translations of 18th and 19th centuries, finding innovative characteristics, but also conservative ones related to the aim of translators (that is, giving source-texts to French dramatists) and also to the long lasting influence of adaptations’ aesthetic of adaptations. Translators’ strategy or commentaries concerning Aristotelian unities or happy ending in Lope’s comedies are two examples of this method.
