Los refranes de La Zucca del Doni en spañol
abstract
The Spanish translation of A.F. Doni’s Zucca (1551) was published by the same printer just four months after the Italian edition; at that time the interest for books in the Spanish language or translated from Spanish was very high, especially in Venice. The translator has remained anonymous in spite of the fact that he shows a strong personality, emerging from the pages of his dedication to G.A. Dovizi and from the translation itself. Besides, his comments on how to translate and his clear (and modern) ideas on interpretation suggest that he approached the text with self consciousness and a precise idea on how to deal with it. For these reasons, it is our pourpose to study his translation, focusing on a peculiar aspect of it, that is its numerous proverbs. We will see different quality levels of translation and we will try to give an explanation for it.
