El laberinto: símbolo y modelo de creación en Cervantes y Thomas Pynchon

Abstract

Here I deal with the topic of the labyrinth as one of the most interesting images in literature in both Cervantes and the American writer Thomas Pynchon. In general, most of the works by Pynchon have a labyrinthine nature, but it is the novel Against The Day the one that explores this in depth. Here the labyrinth can be found not only in the structure but also in the course of events and constant movement of the many characters appearing in this book. The aim is to show that Pynchon, who had access to the Quixote by the lessons he received from Nabokov, uses a parallel technique to that of Cervantes in building and using the topic of the labyrinth in his novels to illustrate the difficulty of human being facing an unstable word. Methodologically we have analysed the correlation between the labyrinths of Cervantes and Pynchon in order to explore the existence of a very specific link between Pynchon’s novel and Cervantes’ Persiles as examples of the evidence of the similarities between both writers.
