Abstract
This article explores the anonymous sonnet 131 («Con una aguda hacha derrocaba…») from the poetry collection Flores de baria poesía, collected in Mexico around 1577. My analysis focuses on the metaphor of lovers as trees. This poetic image prevails in the entire poem and contributes deeply to its final meaning. The exploration on the tradition of this metaphor accompanies the close reading of the sonnet. The conclusion of the analysis is that «Con una aguda hacha derrocaba…» shows an original balance between eroticism and the conventions of courtly love poetry.
