abstract

Self-promotion also existed in the early nineteenth century, long before the invention of social networks, and it went through the press. Napoleon was certainly the most expert at using the press for self-promotion and propaganda, but he was not the only one. Alvise Mocenigo, Venetian patrician, prefect, senator of the Kingdom of Italy and creator of the model village of Alvisopoli, was no less so. His story exemplifies how it was possible to stand out within the Napoleonic elite through skillful use of the periodical press and publications that echoed one’s support for the regime.
