abstract

Between December 1682 and February 1687, Alessandro Farnese - son of the former duke of Parma Odoardo I and minor brother of the current Duke Ranuccio II – was employed as «Great General» by the Republic of Venice against the Ottoman in Greece. In these years Alessandro did not fight much, but, according to chroniclers and the spies of the State Inquisitors, lived for extensive periods in Venice with his personal «court» and had a notable impact on the local festive and social life.
