abstract

As the Tuscan grand ducal resident in Venice, Ippolito Buondelmonti covered the bubonic plague of 1630 in his correspondence with Ferdinand II and the court secretary Balì Cioli. Apart from his sometimes daily dispatches, he also authored the anonymous weekly manuscript avvisi di Veneza containing whatever he and his informants regarded as worth transmitting about current events, addressed not only to the grand ducal court but also to a wider public of officials, ministers and assorted subscribers throughout Italy and beyond. Here we outline what is known and what has remained from these experiences.
