dc.description.abstract	The present paper focuses on the use of the present and past gerunds in the Czech language. These rarely-used linguistic elements are perceived as archaic and their use is generally considered to be on its way to extinction. The aim of the article is to analyse the use of the Czech gerunds with regard to the type of the text, the age of the author and the correctness of their forms. The usage of the present gerund as a fixed expression will be pointed out as well. The research is based on the Czech National Corpus data. The results show that the present gerund is used more frequently than the past gerund despite its more difficult formation. The usage of the gerunds is not limited to the narrative texts only but they can be found in the press as well, though not very often.
