Abstract
In the foreign language classroom, students pepper their teachers with questions about whether their utterances are grammatically and pragmatically correct. This is particularly the case when it comes to neologisms in Italy, a country whose language borrows many words from other languages. Numerous studies have examined neology; among the multiple types of neologisms, experts have usually analyzed lexical loans. However, few studies have considered the role of neology in foreign language teaching. After presenting a theoretical framework, this article analyzes how neology is addressed in the En Acción (levels A1-C1) textbooks for Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language (TSFL). It also includes a case study considering student perceptions of neology, their ability to identify neologisms, and how neologisms are included in foreign language textbooks. This study of lexical neologisms aims to shed light on a field that has generally been overlooked in the teaching of foreign languages.
