Abstract
While the popularization of contemporary Chinese literature is a growing phenomenon, the selection of texts eligible for publication outside China – and, subsequently, the formation of a repertoire in the target markets – is a result of the interaction between various forces and reveals some problematic aspects. Editorial choices inevitably affect the formation of the Chinese literary canon available in translation, defining a certain image of Chinese literature and culture among the target readership. Through the analysis of four editorial projects carried out in the Italian market, a number of factors influencing publishing policies will be highlighted, in order to identify their implications for the formation of the repertoire and for the definition of the image of Chinese literature for the target readership.
