Abstract
Tan intuitiva para los hablantes como escurridiza para los lingüistas es la definición de palabra. Se trata de una unidad esencial de la lingüística, tanto teórica como aplicada, y también lo es para los hablantes, no especialistas en lingüística: las lenguas poseen un número mayor o menor de palabras, los hablantes conocen palabras, los diccionarios contienen palabras, e incluso hay palabras más bonitas que otras. Sin embargo, los lingüistas no han dado aún con una definición satisfactoria y exhaustiva de esta unidad. La aplicación de esta unidad a finalidades concretas y objetivos prácticos, como se hace en este volumen, puede ayudar de alguna manera a su definición teórica y contribuir, sin duda, con una nueva mirada a esta tarea.
