dc.description.abstract	The final clause of Sallust, Jugurtha 3.1 has been transmitted in six different ways in the principal manuscripts; four more reconstructions were proposed by German scholars in the nineteenth century. Close study of these versions reveals that all of them raise problems, and most can be ruled out as unidiomatic. However, the reading transmitted by an authoritative source, the manuscript P poses problems that are soluble, and this version may well be genuine.
