Diego Gracián de Alderete (ca. 1510-1600), humanist. Born in Valladolid and educated in Louvain under Juan Luis Vives, he served as secretary and interpreter to Emperor Charles V and later King Philip II. Gracián produced the first complete Spanish translation of Thucydides, published in Salamanca in 1564. In addition to Thucydides, he translated numerous classical authors into Spanish, such as Plutarch (Moralia, 1548; Apophthegmata, 1533) and Xenophon (1552). Gracián's work had a long cultural legacy: his Thucydides remained the only complete Spanish version for nearly four centuries.

Grácian's translation underwent numerous reprints. The following editions include modifications or significant editorial updates: Gracián 1882 (with a new short preface); Gracián 1889-1913 (emended text); Gracián 1968 (the translation appears alongside those of Herodotus and Xenophon); Gracián 1975 (new preface by Edmundo O'Gorman); Gracián 1986 (new preface by Antonio Alegre Gorri).
