María Rosa Lida de Malkiel (1910-1962) philologist and historian of literature. Lida trained at the University of Buenos Aires, where she initially specialized in Classical Literature with a focus on Greek studies, graduating with highest honours in 1932. From 1935 she joined the Instituto de Filología Hispánica under Amado Alonso, shifting her research toward medieval Spanish literature. She completed her doctorate on the poet Juan de Mena. An earlier project on Flavius Josephus remained unfinished and was published posthumously. After receiving a Rockefeller Foundation fellowship, she worked in the United States at Harvard and later Berkeley, where she developed studies on the classical tradition and its transmission into medieval and Renaissance Hispanic literature. Lida also undertook a complete Spanish translation of Thucydides, which she ultimately left unfinished.
