Gli Alani a nord del Caucaso

Abstract

The Alans, an Iranian-speaking people attested in the chronicles of the ancient world from the first century AD, played an important role in the Caucasian region until the Mongol invasion. They lived in the plains north of the mountain ridge, but after the Mongol invasion and the emergence of the Kabardian power in the region, they moved more and more towards the high mountains and began to live in the gorges of the Central Caucasus. But the memory of the Alan power persisted for long time and deriving from the Alans is still considered prestigious. For this reason, the Alan cultural heritage in this region is disputed up to the present day. This directly affects also the epos of the Narts, known in several languages of the region, which, although it was put in written form only from the nineteenth century, undoubtedly dates back to a very ancient period.
