Abstract
The analysis focuses on some methodological issues in the field of contrastive pragmatics studying empirically conversational discourse markers DMs (such as hombre, bueno) which may act as inferential indexes of rapport management in order to support the emotional communicative dynamics among speakers. Some subjects were asked to complete a visual questionnaire on their perceptions of the emotive involvement of speakers in a series of dialogues taken from contemporary novels, written in Spanish and translated into Italian. More precisely, different groups of subjects were asked to give their impressions on the original Spanish and Italian versions of the dialogues with and without DMs. As a result, the methodological implications of using parallel corpora, literature, and discourse markers to test speaker perceptions will be discussed. The point is to trigger a critical discussion on the possible methods of empirical research in intercultural pragmatics.
