dc.description.abstract	The concepts of taste (gusto) and disgust are two sides of the same coin. Whereas Gracián is consistent in his references to the former, its counterpart, disgust, has to be inferred from his silence on the concept. In this article, I discuss disgust by analyzing the relationship between the body and literary taste in Gracián’s Criticón. I maintain that the Jesuit introduced a newly dynamic dimension on then-accepted ideas of taste. Further, I reject the improper identification of Gracián’s innovations as an expression of ‘bad taste’ and propose instead the notion of disgust in as much as it refers to an aesthetic category that rejects the Rules of Decorum and follows the Varietas to design a grotesque body.
