abstract

Music, and especially songs, plays a fundamental role in the autos (religious plays) of El peregrino en su patria by Lope de Vega, since they form part of the structure supporting the plot of each auto. The songs included in these religious plays reveal that vocal music is not merely another structural element of the play: it is also persuasive and seeks to generate emotions, while pursuing the fulfillment of ideological, didactic and propagandist aims, for which Lope creates an association of musical sounds with specific visual images. The present study analyzes how, by reusing pre-existing songs that were well known by the audience in the auto La Maya, Lope took advantage of the enormous evocative power of music in order to transmit ideas and messages of political, moral and religious nature.
