abstract

This chapter, part of a series of eight, each of which addresses a different topic within the Persian science of meanings (ʿilm-i maʿānī), examines ‘restriction and delimitation’ (qaṣr wa ḥaṣr), i.e. the strategies by which the scope of a predication can be limited. These include the use of lexical items whose semantic value is ‘only’ (in a positive sentence) or ‘except’ (in a negative sentence), the use of adversatives, and particular shifts in word order. This chapter also provides examples of utterances in which the same form has different meanings in different contexts. Examples, mainly from Persian poetry, are given as illustrations.
