Abstract

This miniature has been bought in Iran by Gianclaudio Macchiarella when he was acting as cultural attaché at the beginning of the Nineties of the last century. It is kept in a private collection in Bologna. The miniature depicts a prince hunting onagers (wild asses) in a classical and conventional mountain landscape, with trees, flowers and a stream in the middle of the page, and other figures, mainly attendants. The miniature belongs to the Safavid period and can be dated to the seventeenth century. The second part of the article is devoted the aesthetics of Persian miniatures with an analysis of some passages of the novel Benim Adım Kırmızı (My name is Red), published by the Turkish Nobel prize winner Orhan Pamuk.
