Abstract

The representation of the uncanny has shifted in contemporary Latin American fantastic literature. Traditional dichotomies of inside/outside and self/other have given way to a ‘weird globalization’ characterized by pervasive, viral contagion. This new approach blurs the boundaries between normality and abnormality. Illness, which was once used to rationalize the impossible as an external threat, has become a diffuse condition without a clear origin. This reflects the ‘slow violence’ of global capitalism. In works such as those of Sanchiz, illness manifests as environmental contamination, creating an ambiguous new ecology of the weird that challenges our living space as an ‘affected zone’. This shift mirrors our experience of being enmeshed in ever-changing structures that defy easy interpretation.
