La poesía como documento en Denisse Español, Mayra Santos-Febres y Nancy Morejón

Abstract

This essay questions the explicitness in poetry and emphasizes its ability to be read as a document and as visual art. While analyzing Las mujeres que soy by Denisse Español (Dominican Republic), Abro mi sangre by Mayra Santos-Febres (Puerto Rico) and Madrigal para un príncipe negro by Nancy Morejón (Cuba), we unveil how these authors articulate –drawing from the self, family, and various social perspectives– ‘femininity’, race matters, class, and violence, including the murder of George Floyd. The critic affirms that the elusive dimension that safeguards the poetic language from literal connotations enhances the denunciations articulated beyond the reach of words.
