dc.description.abstract	This paper seeks to contribute to debates about Byzantine societal change between the 7th and 9th centuries AD. It considers the production of Late Roman D Ware at dispersed sites in Pisidia in Asia Minor and the production of painted jars found with globular amphorae in a rural settlement at Kilise Tepe in Isauria. These artefacts help us to examine both continuity of late Roman ceramic traditions and the emergence of new families of vessels in the 7th century. The paper considers the active role of material culture in understanding ideas shared by people across wide areas, including political and traditional chronological boundaries.
