abstract

This study provides a report of the UNESCO documents and the profiles of illiterate or low-educated students in the mother tongue, as defined in international and national studies. We propose a reflection on the concept of student-centered teaching, in which the learning of oral and written skills are closely related. Literacy, then, would no longer be defined as just the teaching of reading and writing in the second language; but rather as an evolving process based both on formal and informal learning and on experiences, derived from interaction and participation in life and new social realities.
