Abstract

One of the most well-known topics in both Quevedo’s and del Valle y Caviedes’s works is the parody of doctors and their unorthodox methods, which often caused more harm than benefit to their unfortunate patients. Linked to this theme are various types of illnesses which, beyond their physical and clinical aspects, are also used metaphorically – especially in Quevedo’s case, notably in his moral treatises. This study analyses how both authors describe and employ illness throughout their works, considering both its effects on the body and its metaphorical function in moral reflections.
