Abstract

This essay studies the representation and deconstruction of imaginaries about the Darién jungle in Colombian and Panamanian literature of the 20th and 21st centuries. After an initial exploration of imperial portrayals of the Darién, this chapter offers a comparative analysis of four contemporary literary works: Los Clandestinos (1957) by César Candanedo, El Tapón del Darién: diario de una travesía (1996) by Alfredo Molano and Constanza Ramírez, Historia secreta de Costaguana (2007) by Juan Gabriel Vásquez, and Santa María del Diablo (2014) by Gustavo Arango. The study focuses on imaginative geographies, decolonial literary geographies, and critical reworkings of historical documents.
