This chapter introduces and develops a frame-based approach to understanding communicative practices in antiquity, outlining its definition, significance, and application across the contributions in this volume. It begins by exploring the core concept of ‘social meaning making’, drawing on key theoretical advancements from sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, and social semiotics.
