Which Interdisciplinarity?

Reinvigorating Theory and Practice as an Opportunity for Byzantine Studies

Abstract

Examinations of the methods and goals of knowledge production at its core are crucial for future scientific developments and challenging for the academic status quo. Interdisciplinarity is a central aspect: at its best, it represents innovation, making knowledge more relevant, balancing integration and specialisation, and raising questions on the viability of expertise. These issues are discussed within the context of Byzantine studies in respect to the latter’s particular traditions, practices, and interests. Ways of bridging interdisciplinary gaps are proposed, together with a paradigmatic study based on the concept of space.
