abstract

On 29th August 2017 the competition law (L. 124) came into effect, sanctioning free reproduction with personal devices of public domain books and archival sources. As a direct consequence public libraries and archives immediateley allowed users to make digital copies of records in consultation removing several onerous levels of bureaucracy and making the role of a researcher much easier. The present essay analyses the document of Consiglio Superiore per i Beni Culturali e Paesaggistici of Minister of Cultural Heritage, Activities and Tourism (16-05-2016) and two ministerial circular letters containing guidelines on free self reproductions in public libraries and archives. The paper emphasises the importance of free reproduction in order to improve preservation of archival records and historical volumes and to relaunch the role of archives and libraries as centres of cultural dissemination in our society.
