On the Road of the Winds
Folk Stories, Meteorological Knowledge and Nautical Enskilment in Japanese Seafaring Tradition
abstract
Starting from a series of historical contexts concerning Japanese seafaring tradition, this paper proposes an anthropological analysis on the practices of sailing navigation, focusing on the recursive interaction of traditional meteorological knowledge, nautical material culture and navigational knowledge that are historically grounded in the contexts of practice.
