Gli strumenti della comunicazione non verbale

Abstract

The second chapter focuses on non-verbal aspects of communication and their relevance in intercultural communication interactions. They may represent misleading factors, because each culture is characterized by its own non-verbal communication. In fact, they exist within each social group and are fully meaningful only in their original context. For people from different cultures they do not make any sense and are mostly impossible to decipher. They are deeply rooted inside the individual, even before he joins his social group. In fact, people who move and travel have interactions with other individuals, whether positive or negative, rather than with cultures themselves. Gestures, interpersonal distances, facial expressions, movements, postures and odors are able to speak a multi-modal language that allows our perceptual abilities to grasp details otherwise unperceptible by linguistic skills alone. Russians have behaviors, attitudes and interactions quite different from those of non-Russians, since they come from a different and diverse cultural heritage. Being conscious of these features lowers the risk of misunderstandings which may offend one’s interlocutors. The most insidious danger is linked to stereotypes and prejudices which are very difficult to ignore. They lead in the opposite direction from respectful and efficient communication.
