Abstract
Focusing on the main features of the ancient writing system of Japan, an emphasis is layed on the difficulties that the Japanese encountered in employing the fundamentally logographic Chinese writing system for their own language, which is structurally very different from Chinese. In particular, among the various types of writing systems developed in ancient Japan, the completely logographic one involves an active role on the part of the reader in order to supply orally the unrepresented parts of the text.
