Caffè e tabacco in Antibari del periodo Ottomano

Abstract

Among the several periods that affected the history of Antibari, the one marked as the Ottoman era can be investigated through a specific category of archaeological items: tobacco pipes and coffee cups. A history of almost three hundred years is undoubtedly marked by social processes of transformation and change. But what are the material indicators that, better than anything else, are able to recount this history? In this context, a rather marginal role unquestionably assumes the consumption of coffee and tobacco. Drugs which qualify the Ottoman world in any reality, they constitute, over time, the indicator of significant social change, the clarification of adhesion or resistance.
