The De Locis Terre Sancte by Francesco Pipino, Translator of the Devisement dou monde

Abstract

As was common in the Middle Ages, Marco Polo’s Devisement dou monde often circulated alongside other works in miscellany manuscripts. Among the texts more often associated with the book, a peculiar case is that of De locis Terre Sancte: in five of the six surviving witnesses it follows the Latin translation of the Devisement made by Francesco Pipino. The brief account of pilgrimage, written by Pipino between 1320 and 1321, has received little attention until now, despite its historical and literary relevance. The essay offers a critical edition of the text, preceded by an introduction about the author and the manuscript tradition, and followed by some historical and archaeological notes.
