Abstract

This paper provides a preliminary overview of ongoing research aiming at updating the understanding of Late Antique and Early Medieval trade networks in northern Italy through the analysis of the distribution of imported goods, notably amphorae and fine wares. The research is based on different approaches, including the systematic census of published finds of amphorae and fine wares and the study of selected assemblages from key sites or areas located along the Po River. Amphora finds from excavations Cremona and the monastery of Leno (BS) were studied as examples of amphora consumption in a river port city and an early Medieval prestige consumption centre. Amphora consumption and redistribution in rural areas was studied through the analysis of survey finds from Ostiglia and other municipalities located along the Po River, showing the occurrence of early Medieval amphorae in rural sites. Field investigation and study of pottery from surveys were combined to define the nature of public and military sites such as those in Sermide and Borgo Mantovano. The case-studies are presented and illustrated together with some preliminary results.
