List of Books from the Port of Piraeus

The inscription, carrying part of a list of books, was found in the surroundings of the port of Piraeus. Some scholars think that it belongs to a library’s catalogue; according to others, it might record a donation offered to a gymnasium’s library. The inscription is of great interest as both a historical and paraliterary document. On the one hand, it is an asset for the study of book circulation and the emergence of public libraries in the Hellenistic age. On the other hand, it provides useful data about otherwise unknown or highly fragmentary texts, and it is a key witness in the history of tradition of all the books mentioned.
