Serialization as Adaptation in Later Eighteenth-Century Magazines and Newspapers

Abstract
Eighteenth-century magazines and newspapers were fecund sources for fiction, printing both existing works and new material: serialization thrived, a form of adaptation that took inspiration from already successful works to invoke familiarity while developing in new directions, conditioned by the distinctive nature of these publication venues. Here, two adaptations of Laurence Sterne’s fiction, serialized in magazine and newspaper outlets, illuminate Sterne’s reception, wider adaptive practices, and the unique contexts of a publication environment characterized by aesthetic imperatives and commercial rivalries.
