Abstract

In 1899, Heinrich Dressel published CIL volume XV 2, 1, laying the foundations for an understanding of Roman amphorae that are still authoritative today. His unique documentation of tituli picti on gelatine sheets, found in the CIL archives in Berlin, is presented here. It illustrates the process from recording the inscriptions to printing the CIL volume. The gelatin sheet documentation is an example of the 19th-century epigraphic working method, which aimed to obtain durable and credible copies of the inscriptions. It also shows what happened to the information collected up to the point of publication, and the effort required to achieve this.
