Quando la sintassi aiuta la filologia
Il movimento del verbo in Bono Giamboni e la traduzione del Tresor
Abstract
This article investigates verb movement in non-V2 environments in the prose work of the 13th-c. Tuscan writer Bono Giamboni. By looking at the placement of V with respect to a selection of adverbs located at different heights within Cinque’s cartographic hierarchy, it shows that the clause-medial movement exhibited by modern Italian represents a later development of the language, which, at the stage investigated here, still exhibits a fluctuation between a lower and higher movement. Beyond its syntactic implications, the identification of this syntactic feature in Giamboni’s prose proves of interest from a philological perspective, in relation to debate surrounding his alledged translation of Brunetto Latini’s Tresor.
