11 • The Final Boundary. The Ecclesiastic Ban on Copernicanism
Abstract
The study discusses the impact of the Ecclesiastic ban on Copernicanism over the Jesuit cosmological teaching. If, in the early seventeenth century, the Santo Antão's mathematics professors insisted that the Copernican system was mathematically sophisticated but physically incongruent and potentially heretical in religious terms, by the middle of the century, teachers such as John Rishton did not doubt to state that 'the system of Copernicus is not physically impossible'. Nevertheless, the ban on Copernicanism by the authorities of the Catholic Church remained an obstacle to further elaborating on heliocentric cosmologies as models that described the world. Confessional anxieties still overshadowed scientific discussions.
