Abstract

With the recent surge of interest in so-called ‘left-behind places’, attention to territorial inequalities has been growing. Italy, given its characteristics, emerges as a paradigmatic case of strong territorial inequalities, marked by the well-known North‑South divide. However, our analysis, conducted at the municipal level (LAU2), shows that these disparities also occur within wealthy regions, and, conversely, prosperous municipalities can also be found in the south. By analysing six socio-economic dimensions at the local level, we present a picture of the Italian territorial disparities in the twenty-first century. Rural areas and certain municipalities classified as towns and suburbs appear as the main areas of relative disadvantage. In this context, place-based policies represent the most robust alternative to foster convergence.
