Barbaries e Romania. Uno sguardo su cittadinanza e inclusione alle spalle di Venanzio Fortunato

Abstract

The paper explores the complex and fluid relationship between Barbaries and Romania in Late Antiquity, using Venantius Fortunatus as a model of cultural synergy rather than conflict and as a lens to examine the evolving concepts of citizenship, identity, and otherness. Tracing the ideological, legal, and cultural shifts from the Constitutio Antoniniana to the rise of Romano-barbarian kingdoms, the study highlights how Roman and barbarian elements, once opposed, progressively merged. Through literary, historical, and juridical analysis, the work illustrates how the binary opposition gave way to complementary dynamics, ultimately shaping new identities and cultural syntheses in post-Roman Europe.
