Abstract

This article explores the idea of in-betweenness as a space of memory and how past events and accidents are spatialized in the mining landscape of Ollagüe in northern Chile. ‘In-betweens’ are simultaneously a social fact and an ethnographic-archaeological space. The notions of risk, suspicion, and threat are proposed to address these spaces and the dissonant rhythms of mining. The architectural concept of in-between contributes to understanding the dissonances and irregularities challenging the structured order of the mining-industrial project established in Ollagüe during the twentieth century.
