La volontà come impulso diretto verso i predicati nella filosofia degli Stoici antichi
Abstract
The reconstruction of the Stoic conception of voluntas is difficult, due to the scarcity of the sources. This paper intends to shed light on Stoic will via the much more attested notion of impulse, which is said to be directed towards predicates. A careful analysis of the fragments shows that βούλησις is, in fact, a ὁρμή; this ὁρμή is described as being directed towards something generic and this something coincides precisely with predicates. Thus, the very notion of will turns out to be an impulse directed towards predicates, a definition which enriches our understanding of voluntas and proves to be important within the theory of action and physics.
