Abstract
While research on the pragmatics of football language in Spanish has primarily focused on digital and printed newspapers, this study aims to explore features of (im)politeness in football TV programmes. Specifically, we examine two varieties of Argentine Spanish: Buenos Aires (bonaerense) and Northwest Spanish. We investigate the distinctive features of the format (objectives, content, and types of interaction) and the roles of the participants (the moderator and panelists). Adopting concepts from Sociocultural Pragmatics and Variational Pragmatics, our findings reveal that speakers of the Buenos Aires variety more frequently employ strategies associated with impoliteness and autonomy, while speakers of the Northwest variety tend to favour affiliative strategies.
