Abstract
Interaction Period 4 corresponds to Cretan Postpalatial Period (Late Minoan IIIA2 late-Late Minoan IIIB), Later Mycenaean Palatial Period-beginning of Postpalatial Period (Late Helladic IIIB-early Late Helladic IIIC) and the third urban period in Cyprus (Late Cypriot IIC-end of Late Cypriot IIC). During this period there a change in the evidence of contacts between Mainland Greece and Cyprus results from both perspectives. A different pattern is especially apparent from the Mycenaean pottery imported to Cyprus since there was a decrease of Late Helladic IIIB imports contemporary with the beginning of the production of a local Aegean-type pottery, while evidence of contacts between Crete and Cyprus showed a marked increase in LM IIIB ceramic imports to Cyprus in Interaction Period 4 compared to Interaction Period 3. Moreover, the period around 1200 BC witnessed dramatic changes both in the Aegean and in Cyprus. The most important events which affected the Greek mainland marked the end of the Palatial Mycenaean period, while on Cyprus there were signs of trouble with traces of destruction and abandonments in many important urban sites. All these events marked the end of a long-lasting process of Cypro-Aegean contacts that predated the social and cultural changes during the twelfth and eleventh centuries BC, both in the Aegean and in Cyprus. For these reasons the detailed discussion on Interaction Period 5 has been considered outside the scope of this book.
