Abstract
Between the last quarter of the thirteenth and the first half of the fourteenth century, the Venetian chancellery, divided between the Ducal chancellery and the Lower chancellery, reached a notable organisational level, thanks to the considerable attention paid to it by the State and the presence of chancellors of high cultural and professional level. Its officials took care of the production of documents of public interest, took part in the sittings of the city councils, assisted the main offices and judiciary, participated in embassies in Italy and abroad, playing a crucial role for the functioning of the institutional structure of the State.
