Abstract
This interview with the Basque writer Karmele Jaio (1970), whose novel Aitaren etxea (My Father’s House) received the Euskadi Prize for Literature in 2020, brings to the fore her preoccupation with contemporary masculinity: the way it is now, and the way it should be. Taking the patriarchy down and moving society toward feminism demand the concept of masculinity be rebuilt. Things are further complicated by the fact that the struggle for the Basque nation put women’s advancement needs on hold – and these women and their needs are Karmele Jaio’s novels’ ultimate protagonists.
